NJI’s history

The New Jersey Institute for Training in Psychoanalysis (NJI) was co-founded by two graduates of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (NPAP), Joel Bernstein, PhD and Neil Wilson PhD, with the objective of providing comprehensive psychoanalytic training to those interested in the deep study of psychoanalysis.

Initially NJI’s training program followed the NPAP program. NJI’s first class was held in September 1972. The first classes were held in an office suite in a rented medical professional building at 800 Teaneck Rd., Teaneck, NJ. During the first year, courses were taught by Joel Bernstein, PhD, Neil Wilson, PhD and Michaela Babakin, MSW. The following year, William Krawosky and Art Robbins joined the faculty

In April 1980, NJI was incorporated as a nonprofit organization under the name The Psychoanalytic Training Institute of New Jersey, Inc. A move was made to quarters in a Dutch Colonial brownstone house at 800 Catalpa Ave, Teaneck, NJ. In 2008 NJI moved to its current location at 121 Cedar Lane, Teaneck, NJ.
